UAE Rethinks Major AI Data Center Project Amid Regional Security Concerns

The UAE is revising plans for a major AI data center project, with security concerns prompting a shift toward a more distributed infrastructure network.

The United Arab Emirates is revising plans for a major artificial intelligence data center project as regional security concerns reshape how critical digital infrastructure could be built.

The project was initially planned as a large AI campus in Abu Dhabi with a total capacity of around 5 gigawatts. According to Reuters, the revised approach would spread the facilities across different locations in the UAE rather than concentrating the entire project in one site.

The changes are linked to concerns about protecting data centers from potential drone and missile threats following attacks on technology infrastructure in the Gulf. Officials are reportedly considering measures including stronger construction materials and, in some cases, underground facilities.

The project is part of the UAE's broader ambition to become a major global hub for artificial intelligence. G42 says the UAE–U.S. AI Campus is designed to provide up to 5 gigawatts of AI data-center capacity, while Stargate UAE is planned as a 1-gigawatt compute cluster involving G42, OpenAI, Oracle, NVIDIA, Cisco and SoftBank.

Why it matters

AI systems require enormous amounts of computing power, making data centers an increasingly important part of the global technology industry. Projects of this scale also depend on reliable electricity, cooling, connectivity and physical security.

The UAE's decision to reconsider the project's design highlights a growing challenge for the AI industry: building large computing facilities while protecting them from physical and geopolitical risks.

The development could also influence how other countries plan future AI infrastructure, particularly in regions where security risks and energy infrastructure are major considerations.
